⚠️

Important: Short-term medical plans are NOT ACA-compliant health insurance. They can exclude pre-existing conditions, have benefit caps, and do not cover the ACA's essential health benefits. They are bridge solutions, not replacements for comprehensive coverage. A broker explains the full tradeoffs before you enroll.

Short-Term Medical — The Right Situations

Between Jobs

Lost employer coverage and not yet in your next plan's waiting period? STM provides immediate coverage — often starting the next day — at significantly lower premiums than COBRA. Best for healthy individuals who need protection against a major health event while in transition.

Missed Open Enrollment

If you missed ACA open enrollment and don't qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, STM is one of the few options available until the next open enrollment window (November 1 – January 15). A broker confirms whether you have a qualifying life event for a SEP before recommending STM.

Waiting for Benefits

New job with a 60-90 day benefits waiting period? STM bridges the gap between your last day of prior coverage and your new employer plan's effective date — protecting you against an unexpected health event during that window.

What STM Covers in Utah

Utah short-term medical plans typically provide PPO-based access to nationwide provider networks, emergency and urgent care, hospitalization and surgery, and sometimes prescription drug coverage. Plans are typically structured with deductibles ($1,000–$10,000), coinsurance, and benefit maximums ($1M–$2M+).

Utah allows STM plans of up to 3 months, with one extension permitted (6 months total maximum). Federal rules allow up to 12 months in many states, but Utah's state-specific rules cap duration more tightly. A broker confirms current Utah-specific STM duration limits at the time of your inquiry.

What STM Does NOT Cover

• Pre-existing conditions (any condition for which you've received diagnosis or treatment in the prior 2–5 years)
• Maternity care
• Mental health and substance use services
• Preventive care
• Prescription drugs (varies by plan)
• ACA essential health benefits

Always verify with a broker before enrolling in STM. If you have any pre-existing conditions, STM may deny claims and leave you with significant bills. ACA Special Enrollment Periods often exist when people think they don't — a broker checks first.
